NUTRITION BEYOND PREGNANCY..for MOM!!

Nutrient Needs continue to be elevated postpartum ,particularly in women who choose to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding  and nutrition of mother :-
Adequate Nutrition is important for breastfeeding .
Any inadequacies in diet of mother can affect quantity of milk secreted and quality to some extent . As for quality , mother draws on her body reserves to meet to meet the needs of lactation at cost of her own health.

ADDITIONAL NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Energy (Thiamine, Riboflavin & Niacin)
A. Protein
B. Fat
C. Calcium
D. Vitamin A
E. Vitamin C
F. Vitamin B12 & Folic acid.

Additional macronutrient requirement during lactation:-

0-6 month - +550 Kcal/d        25g/d           45g/d
6-12month- +400Kcal/d         18g/d          45g/d

0-6 month      +0.3mg/d      +0.3mg/d     +4mg/d

Additional Vitamin & Mineral requirement :
Calcium - +600mg (Total 400mg +600mg/d)
Vitamin A- +350ug retinol (Total 600 ug +350ug/d)
Vitamin C -+40mg/d (Total 40 mg +40 mg/d)

Dietary Guidelines for lactation:
Small frequent meals
Increase intake of fluids e.g. buttermilk, fresh unstrained homemade juices ,milk ,milk based beverages and water .
Avoid highly spiced and strongly flavored foods.
Galactagogues i.e foods that help to produce more milk e.g methi seeds,ajwain,til seeds etc.
Medicines to be taken strictly under medical supervision only.
Avoid tobacco (smoking/chewing)and alcohol .
